LAB-ECOLE SHEFFORD

LAB ECOLE SHEFFORD 2019 (unbuilt) SAINT-JOACHIM-DE-SHEFFORD, MONTEREGIE, QC ANDREW KING FOR LEMAY

the project emerges from a convergence of three systems: that of the found element, the skin and the object

the found element is the pine forest: a captivating element, organized yet natural, at a human scale. the skin is the construction of a series of spaces articulated between the pine forest and the meadow, showcasing the natural heritage of Shefford. Finally, the object is a simple circular form which acts with the forest and skin, to define the framework for the school’s programming.

among forest and meadow, the systems converge. the school emerges.

the new school of Shefford is also guided by the experience of the trees. the movement of the forest, the seasonal variations of the sun, the rain, the show forge the experience of the school’s rooms. the project immerses the children in nature as the school becomes a device of observation, overlaying pine forest, meadow and Mont Shefford. hence, the project offers an endless matrix of visual links between classrooms, interior courtyards, gardens and playgrounds. the school is open yet shielding, identifiable and distinct - bearing a culture of inclusion and curiosity.
