MCGILL STREET MONTREAL, QC unbuilt FLDWRK FOR LEMAY
in the heart of the city center, the mountain imposes its soothing rhythm. the proposed avenue offers a living picture within which the rhythm of its course is gradually slowed down. the conceived space allows for a spontaneous animation of the site through a sober and versatile development: a unifying formal solution able to respond to the local context and adapt to different scales. the evolving landscape of the avenue and its appropriation mimick the varying seasons of the place. betting on the notion of duality and convergence, the avenue is reinvented to reveal its many facets.
the folding and cutting of the ground express the emergence of topographic modulations with clear divisions, punctuating the scenic routes of ascent and descent between mount royal and downtown. the north to south east avenue is rhytmed by a languauge and dimension which magnifies its axis punctuated by a language and an organization that magnifies its east-west dimension, offering a series of both cohesive and nuanced sub-spaces. the project includes:
• 6 topographic ascents and descents
• 5 moments
• 1 living painting
the project attenuates distances and contracts the depth of the visual field. the city and the mountain are presented like two stages in dialogue of one and other. south, the water, the wasteland and plants unfold continuously through a series of overlapping inclined planes. from the mountain, the heart of the city is revealed by a series of squares, urban chambers and moments made up of varied programs and modes of appropriation. the modulation of the ground, structured by the scenic routes, gives rise to a new space: a neutral terrain, a place of meeting, rest and reconciliation, which celebrates the past while opening up to the future.
